Is a Mandala Tattoo for You?

The mandala is a spiritual symbol usually found in Buddhism and Hinduism and is usually drawn from the center out, following a symmetrical pattern. There are many traditional tattoo collectors who are now also considering this symbol of inner self and harmonious balance as part of their tattoo collections.

Is the Mandala a Traditional Tattoo?

Due to it’s geometric structure it looks best when placed on a flat surface and can be rendered in black, color or black and gray. When I first noticed the mandala tattoo making the rounds it seemed to attract the attention of a different sort of tattoo collector, certainly not the traditional tattoo collector. It seemed like a more refined style was developing. It was intricate, geometric and beautiful. But was it traditional?
Don’t get me wrong folks I think mandalas and mandala tattoos are great !
They are aesthetically pleasing and make for great tattoos .We actually jump at the opportunity to tattoo them !
And while they can certainly be rendered in a ‘traditional’ fashion, my opinion is that they probably do not fall into the category, and this is personal opinion,  but let me explain why.

When was the last time you saw an old photo of a tattooed sailor with a mandala tattoo on his bicept ??? Thought not ! lol

did Anyone’s grandfather have a mandala tattooed on his foreman? See my point?

How traditional can they truly be when we’ve only been tattooing them for as long as we have.

There is more to ‘traditional tattoos’ than just bold lines and bright colors 

There is subject matter too !!! 

•Pinups tattoos

•Tigers 

•Anchors and Clipper Ship Tattoos

•Eagle tattoos, Sparrows etc. etc...

And oh yeah  , Roses ! ! !

The ‘mandala’ is a spiritual ,geometric figure symbolizing strength and power and while it has certainly earned its place on the flash rack I maintain my initial stance 

IT IS NOT A TRADITIONAL TATTOO (or is it?) 🤔lol
